The sample exchange program was started as a result of the first meeting of this group. The first sample was sent out on May 11, 1979. The program is simple. Three clinker samples per year are mailed according to the published schedule on this web page. The clinker is commercially produced, and sieved to pass 1/2 inch and be retained on a 4-mesh sieve. A grab sample is requested, not a composite. About 30 grams are mailed in a plastic bag or bottle, along with chemical analysis, kiln feed fineness, and information about the process. Each one receiving a sample makes an evaluation using the equipment available, and sends the results back to the sample supplier. The results are compiled, and a report is sent to each one who supplied data. Companies or individuals are not identified on this report (except for Don Campbell).
To continue receiving samples, results must be submitted. Anyone failing to send in results does not receive a report, and their name is dropped from the mailing list. This avoids the time and expense of sending samples to those who no longer wish to participate. To be reinstated to the sample program, simply notify the next person on the schedule to send you a sample.
If you wish to participate in this program, or wish to be reinstated to the program, advise the next person on the schedule with your request. You can also contact Chuck at Chuck.Buchanan@ashgrove.com. Chuck is also looking for volunteers that would be willing to send out their clinker and compile the report.
The program has proved to be effective, and fills a real need in our industry. Please don't hesitate to give it a try. If you can only do Ono or just reflected analysis - send the results in order to see how you're doing in your technique. Everyone can benefit from this program and it does not cost anything to join.
